I TAKE CARE
Educational project with Marco Polo Primary School, Spinea, Venice
A teaching activity that took place within a larger project framework of collaboration between people and nature, where the local environment acted as a starting point (let’s lift our eyes and look around us… what are we walking on?) to support and guide children in experiencing their school garden not only as a place for play, but as an extension of their classrooms, a place of discovery and of taking possession of the outdoor space.
The children were invited to map the different tree and shrub species present in the school garden, and then to design and personally create their own learning flowerbeds using recycled materials: small green areas next to each classroom to be cared for on a daily basis, so that they could witness every stage of life: preparing the soil, sowing, planting and always putting in their hands, their eyes, and their hearts.
This activity made it possible to expand the knowledge acquired indoors, linking it to the subjects studied and thus harmoniously developing processes of interconnection between disciplinary and extra-disciplinary knowledge. Above all, it opened the way to a new atmosphere, a sense of classrooms under the open sky.
